Lessons from Dylan Field, founder and CEO of Figma
On Design and Creativity
- "Design isn't just about making things look good; it's about solving problems and improving lives. That's the legacy I hope Figma continues to build upon." [1]
- "We're always thinking about how we can make Figma more intuitive and powerful for our users. It's about striking that balance between simplicity and functionality." [1]
- "Design is not just about making things work—it's about how they work." [2]
- "The energy of play, of 'yes-and' in an improv sense—you really do want to enable that for people working in a collaborative space together." [3]
- "Keep the simple things simple, make the complex things possible." [4]
- "As software gets easier to build, design becomes more important. Design is the differentiator in the sea of software." [5]
- "Good design isn't just aesthetic—it's functional and inclusive." [6]
On Entrepreneurship and Startups
- "My advice is to launch earlier than you would like. It will get people excited about your vision and give you valuable early feedback. I wish we would have gotten Figma to market a bit sooner." [8]
- "Our initial strategy was wrong. We were initially going to build a community for designers — like Dribbble — where they could hang out together and riff on designs. We realized we needed to make money first, then build the community." [8]
- "We used the framework “Eliminate, Raise, Reduce, Create” to understand where Figma fit into the existing market and where we could differentiate for our users." [8]
- "I think that we're seeing every part of the economy shape around design... Design leads to winning." [10]
- "If you're an artist you can just sketch something out and draw it and it's beautiful, but if I sketch something out I'm not an artist the idea loses a lot of its luster... And so what we're trying to do is make it so that anyone can be creative by creating free simple creative tools in the browser."
- "Go for an idea that you really care about because even if it doesn't work, you'll still learn from it and you'll still have one."
On Leadership and Management
- "If you hire smart people, you want to empower them to go do what they do best, and I was not doing a good job of that." [3]
- "It's kind of meta, but just like you're building a product for your users, you're also building the company for your team, and you're building a culture for the team." [3]
- "First of all, I think that I didn't fully recognize at the time, but management and leadership are skills."
- "I think that, there's a cultural decision to make, which is, are you a culture where you're always improving or not?"
- "I was always trying to go for the home run on everything, and I was pushing super-hard on the team, but also giving them not a lot of empowerment." [3]
On Company Culture
- "Successful cultures make successful businesses. Often great businesses can obfuscate poor execution, but Dylan is working for excellence in both." [11]
- "The main thing that changes once you go from in-person to remote is you can no longer rely on physical context to instill culture... It matters even more to elevate the role of design and elevate anything you think is really important in that digital context." [10][14]
- "It's really important to be intentional about creating serendipitous moments." [10][14]
- "For Figma one of our values as a company is play we're always trying to make it so that whether it's as a culture or as a product Figma is fun to use."
On Product and Users
- "Not all of them are happy, because here's this thing they want fixed, and that gives me a pulse on what's going on." [12]
- "Figma's product is its primary marketing engine. Its collaborative nature fosters viral, bottoms-up adoption, leading to a best-in-class sales efficiency." [15]
- "I think intuition is like a hypothesis generator... you then take these hypotheses and you put them forward and you debate them and you try to find data to support them or negate them." [4]
- "Aim for a “minimally awesome product” when launching new features or products."
- " The best product managers deliver outcomes and “bring everyone along with them.” They put everyone in a shared headspace around what they're doing and create an environment where people are happy after hitting milestones." [16]
On the Future and Technology
- "A world where design is more accessible and integrated into every aspect of product development. We're just scratching the surface of what's possible with collaborative design." [1]
- "I think that we're in a period of just rapid development for this field [AI]... I suspect that we'll start to see some of these model companies specializing more over time." [17]
- "The future of design tools... is about breaking down the silos between different roles and creating a more integrated workflow."
- "As AI transforms tech, I believe a designer's judgment, taste, and agency will matter more than ever." [2]
- "The amount of software in the world it's going to it already has been exponentially increasing... it's still eating the world i mean the amount of software is still exponentially increasing it's going to exponentially increase even faster in the age of AI."
- "We're prepared to make decisions that may not seem immediately rational." [15]
