Leverage has shadows

The individual operator can fail in more interesting ways than the traditional IC.

They can produce more while knowing less. They can delegate faster while reviewing worse. They can create the appearance of momentum while the work system decays silently.

This is why agentic work needs failure language. Without names for the failures, every problem looks like "the model wasn't good enough" or "I need a better prompt." Usually, the issue is operational.

Why smart ICs are vulnerable

Senior ICs are especially at risk because they can often repair bad output quickly. That masks system problems.

If every agent run requires heroic cleanup, the operator may still ship good work, but the work system is not improving. The human is absorbing the entropy. That is not leverage; it is disguised rework.

The better question is: what failure should the system catch before it reaches me next time?

Countermeasures

The countermeasures are not bureaucracy. They are control surfaces:

  • source review for cognitive surrender;
  • context eviction for rot;
  • portfolio boards for parallel chaos;
  • trust ladders for autonomy;
  • taste rubrics for mediocrity;
  • accountability maps for ownership;
  • logs and scorecards for silent failure;
  • retrospectives for compounding improvement.

The individual operator does not need a giant process. They need just enough instrumentation to know when the machine is lying, drifting, overreaching, or quietly wasting time.

The point

Do not fear agents. Fear unmanaged leverage.

A bad agent run is a recoverable event. A bad operating system is a career liability.
