AI is not only a productivity tool. It is a power redistribution event.
Whenever a technology changes who can access expertise, produce output, analyze information, automate work, or coordinate across boundaries, it changes the organizational power map.
People who previously depended on scarce experts can do more themselves. People who controlled information flow lose some gatekeeping power. People who can direct AI systems well gain leverage. Teams that move from manual throughput to supervised systems can expand their scope. Functions built around review, routing, synthesis, and production have to redefine where their authority and value live.
This is not future theory. It is already happening inside companies.
Expertise leverage is changing
AI does not eliminate expertise. It changes its distribution and leverage.
A non-lawyer can draft a better first pass before legal review. A product manager can analyze user feedback without waiting for an analyst. A founder can prototype workflows without a full engineering cycle. A manager can turn messy notes into a usable operating memo. A customer success leader can synthesize account risk across data sources faster than before.
This gives operators more reach.
But it also raises the bar for experts. If the first draft is easier, expert value shifts toward judgment, review, edge cases, standards, system design, and accountability. The expert who only controlled access to basic output loses power. The expert who can set quality bars, evaluate AI-assisted work, and teach the organization how to use the domain responsibly gains power.
Information asymmetry is weakening — unevenly
Many organizational power structures depend on information asymmetry.
The person who knows how the system works. The function that owns the dataset. The analyst who can answer the question. The manager who can translate executive context. The specialist who understands the process. The team that knows the customer pattern because nobody else has time to read the calls.
AI weakens some of these asymmetries by making search, summarization, drafting, analysis, and translation easier.
But it does not eliminate asymmetry. It creates new ones.
Who has access to the best tools? Who can connect tools to company data safely? Who understands prompting, evaluation, workflow design, and model limitations? Who knows which outputs are reliable enough to use? Who controls permissions, audit logs, and approved systems? Who gets to automate their work, and who gets automated by someone else's process?
The power map shifts. It does not flatten.
In many companies, the new power centers will be people who combine domain judgment with workflow design: they know the work well enough to spot nonsense, and they know the tools well enough to redesign the path. That hybrid capability will matter more than generic enthusiasm for AI.
Speed becomes a power source
AI increases the value of people who can move from question to artifact quickly.
The operator who can turn a vague executive concern into a decision memo, scenario model, customer synthesis, process redesign, or prototype in hours has more influence than the operator who waits for a full project cycle.
Speed alone is not enough. Fast bad work creates noise. But fast useful work changes the conversation. It makes options concrete. It surfaces assumptions. It reduces the cost of iteration. It lets teams test, compare, and decide sooner.
That is execution power.
The danger is that speed can outrun legitimacy. AI-generated artifacts can look more complete than they are. A polished memo can hide weak evidence. A workflow can be automated before accountability is clear. A model-assisted recommendation can create false confidence.
AI-speed needs stronger review, not weaker judgment.
Gatekeepers will be challenged
AI challenges gatekeepers whose power came from controlling access to production or information.
This will create conflict.
Some gatekeepers will respond by blocking. Some will respond by pretending nothing changes. Some will respond by becoming enablement functions: setting standards, approving safe patterns, creating templates, building shared infrastructure, and teaching teams how to move faster without breaking trust.
The last group gains legitimacy.
If you own a gate in an AI-enabled company, the question is no longer “how do we control all use?” It is “how do we create safe enough paths for useful work to happen at higher speed?”
That requires risk tiers, approved data boundaries, review workflows, quality standards, and clear accountability.
Managers lose and gain power
Managers whose power comes from being the routing layer may lose power.
If their main role is collecting updates, summarizing information, assigning tasks, and forwarding context, AI and workflow systems can absorb much of that coordination tax.
Managers whose power comes from judgment, prioritization, coaching, accountability, tradeoff decisions, and system design gain leverage. They can supervise broader systems of people, tools, agents, and workflows. They can spend less time moving information and more time improving decision quality and execution architecture.
AI does not make management irrelevant. It makes weak management more visible.
The AI power-shift scan
Operators should map the AI shift explicitly:
- Expertise: which scarce skills are becoming more accessible?
- Judgment: where does expert review become more important, not less?
- Information: which asymmetries are weakening, and which new ones are forming?
- Gatekeeping: which approval paths need to become enablement systems?
- Speed: where can AI compress cycle time enough to change influence?
- Resources: which teams can expand scope without adding headcount?
- Decision rights: who decides when AI output is good enough to use?
- Trust: where will AI use create legitimacy concerns?
- Risk: what data, legal, customer, or quality boundaries matter?
- Capability: who is becoming more capable, and who is becoming dependent?
This scan is not an AI strategy. It is a power map for AI-enabled work.
Ethical AI power
AI can democratize capability. It can also concentrate power.
The ethical operator uses AI to make people more capable, not more surveilled, replaceable, or dependent without honesty. They clarify when AI is being used. They protect sensitive data. They keep humans accountable for decisions. They avoid using polished AI output to overwhelm dissent. They make quality standards visible. They share the tools and patterns that create leverage instead of hoarding them.
AI should reduce unnecessary bottlenecks. It should not become a new hidden authority layer nobody understands.
The hard truth
AI is changing who can know, build, decide, synthesize, review, and move work.
That means it is changing power.
Strong operators will not treat this as a tools rollout. They will map how AI changes authority, influence, legitimacy, dependency, expertise, and trust — then redesign work so the new power creates capability instead of chaos.
