Restraint is the gap between stimulus and damage.
Many operator mistakes happen in the first thirty seconds: the sharp reply, the visible contempt, the premature decision, the Slack message that becomes a screenshot.
Restraint is not passivity. It is refusing to let the first chemical wave write policy. You can still act firmly after the pause. Usually you act better.
Operator artifact: create a pause rule for loaded moments: draft, wait ten minutes, reread for contempt, replace accusation with request, then send or schedule the conversation.
Field test: Build a pause rule for high-stakes replies and emotionally loaded meetings.
This is part 4 of 10 in Self-Regulation for Operators.
