AI makes taste more valuable because AI makes mediocrity cheaper.

That is the uncomfortable part. The tools are powerful. They can accelerate real work. They can help explore, draft, summarize, code, classify, compare, and automate. Used well, they give small teams leverage that used to require far more people.

But they also produce fluent average work at industrial scale.

A company without taste will experience this as productivity. More drafts. More concepts. More research summaries. More outbound emails. More code. More internal plans. More dashboards. More documentation. More strategy language. More everything.

Then the hidden cost appears: review fatigue, generic output, shallow understanding, source mistakes, duplicated work, fragile automations, and a growing inability to tell which outputs deserve trust.

AI changes the production problem into an acceptance problem.

The question is not only “Can the model make this?” The question is “What would make this acceptable?”

Acceptable for what? Brainstorming? Internal discussion? Customer communication? Legal review? Code deployment? Hiring? Financial analysis? Product decision? Executive recommendation? Each context needs a different bar.

Taste is what notices that difference before one standard gets applied everywhere.

For low-stakes exploration, rough AI output can be useful. It can widen the field. It can give language to react against. It can surface obvious options quickly so the team can move past them. In that context, the standard is not truth or polish. The standard is usefulness for thinking.

For decision support, the bar rises. Sources matter. Assumptions matter. Missing evidence matters. Confidence should be earned. The output should make uncertainty visible instead of smoothing it away.

For external claims, the bar rises again. Customer-facing language needs source verification, precision, ownership, and policy alignment. “The model said” is not evidence. If the claim matters, someone owns it.

For people decisions, the bar is higher still. AI can help organize evidence, but it must not become a laundering machine for impressions. Performance reviews, hiring screens, promotion packets, and sensitive management notes require direct examples and human accountability.

Taste in AI work is mostly acceptance discipline.

This is where many teams fail. They invest in generation and underinvest in judgment. They experiment with prompts, agents, tools, and automations, but the review model remains informal. People approve outputs because they look complete. Managers skim. Review queues become overloaded. No one tracks override rates, failure modes, or downstream impact. The company celebrates speed while quality drifts.

A bad AI output is a local problem. A bad acceptance standard is an operating problem.

The difference is visible in code. A weak AI-assisted pull request may pass a quick glance because the syntax is clean and the explanation is confident. Taste asks the unglamorous questions: are there tests for the failure path, does this change respect the ownership boundary, can it be rolled back, did the model invent an API behavior, and will the next engineer understand why this exists? The output is cheap. The accountability is not.

The practical move is to define the quality bar before scale. What is a good support draft? What is a good account summary? What is a good candidate screen? What is a good code change? What is a good research synthesis? What is a good strategic recommendation?

Do not answer with adjectives. Answer with examples.

Build a ten-example rubric: five good outputs, three acceptable-but-flawed outputs, and two unacceptable outputs. Explain why. Include source use, completeness, risk handling, tone where relevant, uncertainty, escalation behavior, and policy boundaries. This is not busywork. It is how taste becomes operational.

The next move is risk tiering. Not every AI workflow needs heavy governance. A personal brainstorming assistant does not need the same controls as an automated customer reply system or a hiring decision aid. Taste avoids both extremes: reckless automation and paralyzing review.

A simple tiering question works: what is the cost of being wrong, and who would be affected?

If the cost is low and internal, move fast. If the output affects customers, money, security, legal risk, health, hiring, performance, or public trust, slow down at the right gate. Not everywhere. The right gate.

Taste also matters in prompting, but not in the superficial way people often discuss it. The best prompt is not magic wording. It is a clear brief. Audience, goal, sources, constraints, decision context, examples, failure modes, and acceptance criteria. Prompting is just one interface for judgment.

Weak taste asks AI for “a strategy.” Strong taste defines the decision the strategy supports, the evidence base, the constraints, the tradeoffs to examine, and what would make the recommendation unusable.

Weak taste asks for “better copy.” Strong taste says the copy must use customer language, name the pain, make one promise, avoid category clichés, and provide proof at the moment skepticism appears.

Weak taste asks for “code.” Strong taste defines tests, architecture constraints, ownership boundaries, rollback expectations, and review requirements.

AI also changes apprenticeship. If junior people skip the messy work of drafting, comparing, revising, and seeing consequences, they may produce more while learning less. Managers need to design learning loops: review AI outputs, compare sources, explain rejections, inspect failures, and ask people to state why an answer should or should not be trusted.

Do not let the machine consume all the formative struggle. Some struggle is waste. Some struggle is how taste forms.

The strongest AI operators will not be the people who use the most tools. They will be the people who combine tools with clear judgment: what to ask, what to ignore, what to verify, what to improve, what to automate, what to keep human, and what consequence they are willing to own.

Output is material. It is not judgment.

That line should sit above every serious AI workflow. The model can produce material quickly. The organization still owns framing, selection, verification, integration, and accountability.

Taste sees when the material is useful. Standards protect the acceptance bar. Craft turns the selected material into work the company can stand behind.

AI does not make taste obsolete. It makes weak taste easier to hide for a while and more expensive when reality catches up.
