Agents need business objects, relationships, and states before they need more prose.
A human can read "follow up with the customer" and infer the messy structure underneath. Which customer? Parent account or workspace? Current buyer or technical admin? Open opportunity or existing contract? At-risk renewal or implementation project? An agent needs those distinctions made explicit.
Grounding starts with objects. Customer, account, contact, contract, invoice, product, workspace, ticket, project, task, employee, vendor. Then relationships: who owns it, who pays, who uses, who is affected, which records refer to the same real-world thing. Then states: active, renewing, blocked, escalated, provisioned, paid, overdue, deprecated.
Without that grounding, tool access is risky. The agent may update the wrong account, summarize the wrong workspace, route a ticket to the wrong owner, or combine two records that only look similar. The model may sound confident because the language is clean. The business object is still wrong.
The AI context layer should pull object definitions from the semantic layer and authority from systems of record, then expose the right slice for the task. For a renewal summary, the agent needs the contract, account hierarchy, owner, usage state, support state, and permissible external claims. For an internal escalation, it may need more sensitive context.
Good grounding reduces prompt burden. Instead of explaining the company from scratch each time, the agent receives structured business context with known boundaries.
The goal is not to make agents understand everything. It is to stop them from guessing the objects they are acting on.
